Meeting God: Elements of Hindu Devotion American Museum of Natural HistorySeptember 8, 2001 through March 31, 2002 As a guest curator employed by the American Museum of Natural History, Stephen Huyler worked for three years to amend and adapt his previous exhibition: "Meeting God: Elements of Devotion in India" to focus on the identity of the large Hindu population of New York City and its environs. For this purpose, he edited out the material dealing with Sikhism and Jainism, and expanded the material on Hinduism drawing from the extensive reserve collections in the museums storage. In collaboration with dozens of very talented museum staff, the show was beautifully designed and presented and complemented by five videos. It drew a very popular public response that was increased when it was realized how relevant this show was to popular needs after the disastrous events of 9/11/01. The exhibition became a sanctuary and place of healing for many people. |
