India Adorned: Selections from Mingei International's Stephen Huyler Collection Mingei International Museum; Balboa Park, San Diego, CAJuly 12, 2008 through mid-September, 2009 On Stephen Huyler's' first trip to India, in 1971-72, he conducted research on Indian embroidered and appliquéd textiles. As many of the crafts documented were being destroyed, he began to selectively collect fine examples. Over his subsequent decades of work in India, Dr. Huyler continued to expand his collection into other forms of folk and decorative arts and crafts. In 2007, Stephen Huyler gave this entire collection of more than five hundred pieces to Mingei International Museum, an exemplary museum of folk arts and crafts situated right next to the San Diego Museum of Art in Balboa Park, San Diego. "India Adorned" is an exhibition of some three hundred pieces chosen from that collection by staff curator Rochelle Kessler. The show is complemented by "Eye for India", a video that documents Huyler's three decades of research and collecting in South Asia. |
