STEPHEN’S INDIA

My legs span the globe: one foot firmly rooted in America, my homeland, and the other planted just as deeply in South Asia. India has drawn me irresistibly for over fifty years. Welcomed by men, women, and children from every walk of life as an honored guest, I’ve melded into their culture, participated in their lives, been motivated by their stories, and, gaining their trust, benefited from their wisdom. I’ve lived in Indian homes in almost every region of the subcontinent, observing and documenting their art and creativity in photographs, films, books, and exhibitions, attempting to share with others the insights these many individuals have given me.

My life is about building bridges of communication and understanding between India and the rest of the world, hoping to dispel misconceptions and unjust criticisms and portray these diverse cultures as clearly and accurately as possible.
